What do you do when everything you depended on is taken away? The story of Ruth answers that question — not with a theory, but with a choice.
When Good People Face Hard Times
Ruth was a kind and gentle woman whose life was once full of joy — a loving family, a safe home and hopes for the future. Then her husband died, and the house that had been full of laughter became silent. In her day, a widow had little protection and little standing. To the world around her, Ruth looked powerless, with no future at all.
Ruth’s story teaches an important truth: even faithful people go through very hard seasons. Suffering is not proof that God has forgotten us. People forgot Ruth — but God never stopped watching over her.
The Choice That Changed Everything
Ruth was given a way out. She could return to her own people and her old life, where things would have been easier. Instead, she chose to stay with her mother-in-law Naomi, and she made one of the most powerful promises in the Bible:
“Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God” — Ruth 1:16 (KJV)
With that choice Ruth became a true leader of faith. She chose:
- Faith over comfort — the harder road with God instead of the easier road without Him
- Obedience over fear — stepping into a foreign land with nothing but trust
- God above everything — “thy God my God” was not a phrase but a decision
Faith That Works Quietly
Ruth did not complain about her difficult life, and she did not stop trusting God. She went out to the fields to glean the leftover grain — hard, humble work — so that she and Naomi could eat. Her faith was not loud; it was faithful.
Boaz, the owner of the field, noticed her character and blessed her:
“The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.” — Ruth 2:12 (KJV)
God Remembers What People Forget
The widow whom people overlooked became the wife of Boaz, the mother of Obed — and the great-grandmother of King David (Ruth 4:13–17). Centuries later, Ruth’s name appears in the family line of Jesus Christ Himself (Matthew 1:5).
The memory verse for this lesson captures it perfectly:
“So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.” — Psalm 58:11 (KJV)
Lessons from Ruth for Us Today
- Hard seasons are not the end of the story. God is still writing it.
- Faith is a choice before it is a feeling. Ruth chose God while grieving.
- Faithfulness in small work matters. Gleaning in a field led to a royal family line.
- God rewards those who trust Him — in His time and His way.
Reflect and Apply
As you meditate on Ruth 1:16 today, ask yourself:
- Is there a loss or disappointment that has made me pull away from God?
- Where am I choosing comfort over faithfulness?
- What small, faithful work is God asking me to keep doing today?
Conclusion: Choose God in the Hard Place
Ruth had every reason to give up. Instead she said, “thy God my God” — and God turned her loss into a blessing that reached all the way to Jesus. The same God who saw Ruth sees you today. Choose Him in the hard place.
