Esther: When Small Faith Becomes Great Courage (Esther 4:16)

2 October 2026 · 3 min read

Esther 4:14 — Who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

Scripture Focus: Esther 2:8 | Esther 4:11–16 | Esther 5:3 | Proverbs 21:1 | James 4:10

Have you ever felt too ordinary for God to use — or too afraid to do what you know is right? Esther felt both. Her story shows what happens when small faith is placed in God’s hands.

An Ordinary Girl with an Extraordinary Purpose

Esther was not rich or famous. She came from a simple home and lived an ordinary life, raised by her cousin Mordecai. When the king searched for a new queen, many young women were brought to the palace, and Esther was one among many (Esther 2:8). People saw an ordinary girl. God saw what He could make of her tomorrow.

Waiting Is Not Wasted

Esther did not become queen overnight. She spent a long season in the palace before she was chosen — years of patience, obedience and learning to trust God. What looks like delay to us is often preparation in God’s plan. God uses waiting time to train His children.

And when she was chosen, Esther did not become proud. She understood that her position was a gift from God, not something she had earned.

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” — James 4:10 (KJV)

Fear Was Real — Faith Was Stronger

Then came a crisis. A law was made to destroy Esther’s people. To help them she had to go before the king uninvited — and anyone who did so could be put to death (Esther 4:11). Esther felt fear, doubt and weakness. Mordecai challenged her:

“Who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” — Esther 4:14 (KJV)

Esther did not rush ahead on her own strength. She called her people to fast and pray with her first, and then she made her decision:

“So will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.” — Esther 4:16 (KJV)

Esther’s faith may have seemed small, but placed in God’s hands it became great courage. Small faith is enough when it is given to God.

God Holds the King’s Heart

When Esther stood before the king, God gave her favour. Instead of punishment she heard: “What wilt thou, queen Esther? and what is thy request? it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom” (Esther 5:3). The memory verse for this lesson explains why:

“The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.” — Proverbs 21:1 (KJV)

Lessons from Esther for Us Today

  1. God uses ordinary people. Your background does not limit His plan.
  2. Waiting seasons are training seasons. Patience prepares us for our moment.
  3. Humility keeps us usable. Esther never sought her own glory.
  4. Pray first, then act. Esther fasted before she stepped forward.
  5. Courage is faith in action. Fear may be present, but it does not have to decide.

Reflect and Apply

As you meditate on Esther 4:14–16 today, ask yourself:

  • Where might God have placed me “for such a time as this”?
  • Is fear stopping me from doing something I know is right?
  • Am I seeking God first — in prayer — before I act?

Conclusion: For Such a Time as This

Esther began in a simple home and ended in a palace — not because she was the most impressive, but because she was humble, patient and willing to trust God when it cost her everything. The God who turned the king’s heart is the same God who holds your situation today.
